Early Life, Family, and Education

Jack is the son of Val Kilmer from his marriage to actress Joanne Whalley, who’s known for her film work during the 1980s, some of which she worked in alongside Val. Jack grew up in Los Angeles and became quite familiar with the acting scene, thanks mostly to his parents.

He established a lot of connections over the years, and was inspired by the success of his father. He was a student at The Center for Early Education, a private school located in West Hollywood, known for teaching children of celebrities.

During his time there, he would become close friends with Gia Coppola, the granddaughter of director Francis Ford Coppola. She was a bit older than him but they connected thanks to their entertainment industry background. The two remained friends and stayed in touch even as they moved forward with their lives.

Palo Alto – Acting Beginnings

In the early-2010s, Gia approached Jack with a script for “Palo Alto”, an intended film adaptation of the book of the same name written by James Franco, which tells the story of teenagers living in Palo Alto, inspired by Franco’s own experiences as a teenager.

Gia was planning to direct the film, and while working on it together, Jack was encouraged to audition for one of the main roles. He was accepted and cast as Teddy, leading his father to become involved as a part of the cast as well – the film starred James Franco, Emma Roberts, and Zoe Levin. He was 16 years old at the time, and didn’t plan on starting a career as an actor but had a natural talent, and received many positive reviews for his performance, with many calling it natural and sincere.

At the time, he had just finished his high school education and was planning to enroll in college. However, he got the acting bug after the project, and decided to pursue it full-time.

Two years later, he was cast in the film “The Stanford Prison Experiment”, which is based on the real-life experiment of the same name conducted at Stanford University during the 1970s.

Continued Acting Work – Lords of Chaos

Jack was then cast in the independent film “Len and Company”, in which he worked alongside Juno Temple, Kathryn Hahn and Rhys Ifans. The following year, he worked on “The Nice Guys” appearing as the character Chet in the film which starred Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe, telling the story of two men who team up to look for a missing girl during the late 1970s. The film received positive reviews throughout its run.

Following a few more projects, he gained a lot more attention when he was cast in the film “Lords of Chaos”, portraying the Swedish black metal musician Pelle Ohlin, better known under his stage name Dead. The title of the film is based on the book of the same name by Michael Moynihan and Didrik Søderlind, discussing the career of the black metal band, Mayhem. The film attracted numerous positive reviews, but was controversial to the metal community who disliked the inaccuracy of many of the band’s (supposed) historical events. Jack got almost universal praise for his performance, as he was able to accurately portray the late musician.

Recent Projects

In 2018, Kilmer had a string of films, including “Josie” which starred Sophie Turner as the titular character, in the story of a mysterious high school student who moves to a small town, leading to the attention of a local recluse. He also worked on “Summer ‘03”, which starred him alongside Joey King and Andrea Savage. Afterwards, he was in “The Pretenders”, another James Franco film starring Kilmer alongside Jane Levy and Shameik Moore. The film was premiered at the Torino Film Festival.

One of his latest projects is the film “Hala”, which was premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.

The titular character is portrayed by Geraldine Viswanathan, and tells the story of a woman’s journey of self-discovery; it received positive reviews with many of the performances being praised. Jack also appeared in a music video for Ozzy Osbourne’s “Under the Graveyard”, and is currently working on a film called “Body Brokers”, which stars Jessica Rothe and Frank Grillo. The film started its production in 2019 though it is not known how far along the film is, given that most productions have stopped due to the coronavirus.

Personal Life

Jack is single and is a private person, not revealing a lot of information aside from his acting projects. During his free time, he enjoys playing sports and is an avid skateboarder. He also goes surfing and plays music, much like several of his characters in his films. He is the brother of Mercedes Kilmer, who also pursued an acting career. Due to his mother being of British descent, he has both American and British citizenship.
