Early life and education
Susan was raised alongside her older sister in both New Jersey and New Hampshire, by their father who was a painter and their mother who was working at a local company as a secretary.

She grew up being interested in arts, and also while attending a public high school in New Hampshire, she became interested in acting and creative writing, and was physically active playing a variety of sports such as soccer and volleyball. Susan was painting in her spare time, and then after receiving her first camera, she became interested in photography.
Upon matriculation in 1976, she enrolled at Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1980.
Career as an artist
She launched her career upon enrolling at a college, and was involved in the art industry for several years before holding her first solo photo exhibition at a local gallery in 1998.
Susan is specialized in taking pictures of landscapes, and she went on to hold exhibitions in several big cities in the US such as New York City, San Francisco and Los Angeles in California, and Miami in Florida. One of her biggest and most important exhibitions was in 2009 when she presented her work at the TJ Walton Gallery in Massachusetts, with her partner Rachel attending.
The year 2010 saw her feature in her first show “American Device Recent Photographs”, and after that, she worked on her three series of landscape photos called “American Bond”. In 2017, she became a member of the art program Art in Embassies, and some of her photos made for this program were bought by the United States Embassy Art in Embassies.

Love life and relationship with Rachel Maddow
Susan met her girlfriend Rachel Maddow in 1999 when Susan hired her to help with her yard – at the time, Rachel was working on obtaining her Juris Doctor degree. The two went on their first date to the Ladies Day on the Range event organized by the National Rifle Association. They are currently living together at their farmhouse in Western Massachusetts, while they also have a flat in Manhattan.
Some of Susan’s fans believe that she is bisexual and that she was in a long-term relationship with a boy while she was attending college, allegedly dating for over three years before splitting ways. Rachel was raised in Castro Valley alongside her older brother David, by their mother Elaine who worked as a school program administrator, and their father Robert B. Maddow who was a captain in the US Air Force and a lawyer. The family is Catholic and highly religious, and many things were forbidden in the family, so it was thus a shock for Elaine and Robert when they found out Susan was dating a girl. Rachel attended Castro Valley High School, and after matriculation in 1991 enrolled at Stanford University, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in public policy in 1994. During her freshman year, a college newspaper published an article about her being lesbian, which is how her parents found out about it.
