Richard was raised in Mississauga by his mother Cynde Harmon who is a film producer, and his father Allan Harmon who is a film director; he has one sister, Jessica Harmon who has also become an actress. Richard grew up surrounded by movies and TV series, and became interested in the film industry around the age of five when he started watching shows on TV, while also often keeping his parents company on the set of the movies they were working on.

He attended a local high school where he was playing soccer for the school’s team, but was mostly focused on acting – he was a member of the school’s drama club, and appeared in most of the school’s plays. Upon matriculation, he didn’t enroll at college but rather focused on an acting career.

Richard made his debut film appearance in “School of Life” in 2005, which was followed by roles in the films “Painkiller Jane”, “To Be Fat Like Me”, and “Trick ‘r Treat”. He was invited to play side roles in two movies in 2008, entitled “Left Coast” and “The Ambassador”, while 2009 saw him appear in “Wolf Canyon”.
He gained recognition after appearing in the adventure fantasy film “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief” which starred Logan Lerman and Kevin McKidd, and follows a story of a teenager who, after finding out his father is a Greek god, goes on to try and stop a fight between the gods.
He went on to appear in movies such as “Dear Mr. Gacy” and “Triple Dog” released in 2010, and “Time After Time” in 2011, before starring in the romantic science fiction film “Judas Kiss”, which also starred Genevieve Buechner. Richard then played side roles in several movies in 2012, such as “Rufus”, “Girl in Progress”, and “Grave Encounter”, followed by appearances in “One Foot in Hell” and “Evangeline” in 2013.
Richard’s next notable role was in the romantic fantasy film “The Age of Adaline”, which starred Blake Lively and Harrison Ford, and follows a young woman who becomes immortal and forever young after an accident. He went on to appear in four episodes of “Bates Motel”, and was then invited to portray John Murphy, a recurring character in the drama science fiction series “The 100”, which starred Eliza Taylor and Bob Morley, and follows the story of humans living in a spaceship who come back to Earth to try and repopulate it years after it was ruined by a nuclear war. Richard has been a member of the cast since 2014, and is still shooting for the series.
Some of his other appearances have been in “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” in 2015 and “Van Helsing” in 2019.
