Early life and family
Rhett was born on 11 October 1977, in Macon, Georgia USA, to parents Jim and Dianne McLaughlin. He lived the earliest years of his life in Macon, but in 1984 he moved with his family to Buies Creek, North Carolina.
While in the first grade at Buies Creek Elementary School, Rhett met his life-long friend and partner in mischief, Link. The two were inseparable, and known for being very naughty. In fact, the name of their YouTube channel is derived from an elementary school incident.
After scribbling profanity on their desks, both Rhett and Link were given detention by their teacher, Ms Locklear, and given Mythical Beasts colouring pictures to complete.
The same title is today used to describe their YouTube tribe of fans, all known as Mythical Beasts.
At a young age they both displayed a love for films, and when they were 14 co-wrote a screenplay which they never finished filming. They were also part of a Christian-punk rock band that was named “The Wax Paper Dogz”.
Educational background
Rhett attended school and later varsity with his best friend Charles. Together they finished elementary school at Buies Creek Elementary, and were later roommates while attending the State University of North Carolina.
Both of them studied engineering and completed their degrees. Rhett graduated in 2000 with a Magna Cum Laude in civil engineering, and Link in 2001 with a Summa Cum Laude in industrial engineering.
After varsity they worked in their respective fields, and also joined a Christian organization called Cru, for which they performed comedy sketches. It was during their time with Cru that they developed their true interest in becoming entertainers.
Career
Rhett’s career as a YouTuber began in 2011 with the launch of his co-owned channel.
The first talk show the duo hosted launched on 3rd January, and was cast in their studio in Fuquay-Verina, North Carolina. The show was entitled “Good Morning Chia Lincoln”, derived from the Chia figurine of Abraham Lincoln that would be the centrepiece of the show.
Each show would usually be based on a specific subject that mostly included personal experiences, and what their opinion was on the matter. The show ended after the chia figurine died. They began a second show entitled “Commercial Kings”, which launched in June 2011, and ended in August of that same year.
Following this, the two comedians, Rhett and Link, moved to Los Angeles, California where they started their third and ongoing show, “Good Mythical Morning”, which launched on 9th January 2012.
It has been a smashing success since, with 16.4 million subscribers as of April 2020. The show continues, and now has more than 1700 episodes. Following their prime success, the duo launched a fourth show that aired immediately after “Good Mythical Morning”, entitled “Good Mythical More”.
The two friends also started a podcast series before the launch of their fourth show – “Ear Biscuits”. It was ongoing until 2019, and included several interviews with other YouTube personalities, and plenty of personal discussions. It was once rated at number 14 in the iTunes list of best podcasts, and won the duo a Shorty award for best podcast in 2016.
They have launched several more channels that are each dedicated to the variety of shows Rhett and Link host, including “This is Mythical”, “Mythical Kitchen”, and “The Mythical Show”. The pair has won several Streamy awards, and in 2019 acquired the channel Smosh after Defy Media’s shutdown.
They have also dabbled in music, and are best known for their epic rap battles that involve historical figures. They have performed internationally, and released two albums to date – “Just Mail Us The Grammy”, and “Up To This Point”.
