Early Life, Education, and Career Beginnings
Nicole grew up in Lake Orion and at a young age, she became familiar with the renovation business thanks to her parents, who owned a home renovation business based in Detroit, and their success inspired her to also pursue a similar field. She learned the basics from them though her parents insisted that she complete her education.
She attended the nearby Lake Orion High School, and after matriculating the family realized that getting into a good university would also cost too much, so to help her gain extra money, she began working at the restaurant Hooters as one of the popular restaurant’s servers – Hooters is known for its use of young women often called Hooters Girls.
These women are often chosen based on their sex appeal, and they use outfits to help elevate it even further. The restaurant offers hamburgers, sandwiches, alcoholic beverages, chicken wings, and more. Its name is derived from the hoot of the owl, but is also a double entendre as Hooters is also the slang for breasts as popularized by comedian, Steve Martin.
Curtis used her time at Hooters wisely, as she was able to talk to numerous businessmen, including some Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) to help learn more about running a successful enterprise. During her free time, she developed her design skills and extended her interest and knowledge in restoration.
As opposed to new design trends, she advocates the use of classic styles that adhere to the original design of the house. This philosophy would help define her career in the future.
She began working in a cleaning business while also doing a few design projects. Due to the success of this initial business, she opted to drop out of college to focus on work; she obtained a realtor’s license and began restoring and selling homes in the Minneapolis area. She was attracting attention, and was eventually approached by television networks to become a recurring guest in the show “Sweat Equity”, which airs on the Do It Yourself (DIY) network and focuses on renovating that would help homeowners save more money.
She worked alongside Amy Matthews, a well-known contractor who also works as a personal trainer on the side.
In 2010, Nicole’s expertise and business acumen led her to envision a show of her own. She worked with other experienced producers to help start the show “Rehab Addict”, which was picked up by both the DIY and the Home and Garden Television (HGTV) networks. With the creation of the show, they quickly separated themselves from the pack of renovators by exploring more about restoration and preservation. A lot of her work has been featured in publications in various parts of the country.
She has mainly worked in the Minnesota area, her home state of Michigan, and Ohio state.
Due to her expertise, she is often consulted when it comes to the renovation of homes that were built before World War II. She restores them to their original glory rather than incorporate more modern design styles. She did later return to school to finish a degree in education, and considered taking up law classes though eventually went against it. She also renovated a home herself in Detroit which dates its history back to 1904. The show has been running for eight seasons, but no news has come for any upcoming seasons since 2018.
Due to her close connections with DIY, Curtis has also been approached to make guest appearances in other shows. She appeared in “Daryl’s Restoration Over Hall” in which he works alongside Hall & Oates vocalist Daryl Hall. The show has a similar feel to hers, as Hall prefers vintage and historic homes with the intent of restoring them to their original structure. In the show, she’s helped design 18th-century homes and farms.
She also made a guest appearance in the reality competition series “Beach Flip”, a show in which four teams battle it out to renovate beach homes which were built during the 1980s.
The team has eight weeks to renovate the home and hopefully increase its value – the winner of the show would win $50,000. However, the show didn’t gain a lot of popularity, and was canceled after its first season. Recently, she’s not been focused on any other projects though she has confirmed that she will return to HGTV to continue her show “Rehab Addict”. She’s also written an autobiographical book, detailing her journey so far.
Nicole has never been married though she has had two long-term relationships.
The first was with a man named Steve, whom she was with for over a decade. They have a son together but their relationship eventually soured and they broke up in 1996. Sometime in the 2000s, she began dating Shane Maguire and the two also have a child together. They stayed together until 2015abefore breaking-up, leading to a very long custody battle for their child. The two eventually reached multiple compromises to help achieve shared custody. As a part of the settlement, she has agreed to create a trust fund for their child, and also use some of her finances to help her former partner buy a home in California to have easier access to the child.
