James Herbert Keenan was born in Ravenna, Ohio USA, on 17 April 1964, his zodiac sign is Aries and he holds American nationality.
He was initially raised in Ravenna as an only child by his father Michael Loren Keenan, and his mother Judith Marie, but who divorced when he was four, after which Maynard saw his father only once per year for the next 12 years. His mother remarried but when he turned 12, but suffered from a cerebral aneurysm, and sent Maynard to move in with his father who was living in Scottville, Michigan, which Maynard today considers as one of the best decisions ever made in his life.
Maynard attended Mason County Central High School where he was a wrestler as his father was a wrestling coach there, but when he matriculated in 1982, his father stopped coaching.
Maynard decided to join the US Army where he served as a forward observer, but after a year, he enrolled at West Point Prep School, then went on to attend Kendall College of Art and Design where he studied art. After graduation, he began working at a pet store from which he was fired, so he then switched to set construction. He played in several bands in the ‘80s such as Tex.A.N.S. and Children of the Anachronistic Dynasty, before in 1989 moving to Los Angeles where he met Adam Jones, and the two together with Dany Carey and Paul D’Amour founded the band Tool.
Their first extended play (EP) was released in November 1991 while their debut album “Undertow” was released in 1993.
The band’s second album “Ænima” followed in October 1996, being certified platinum twice, and winning a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance two years later. Their third album, “Lateralus” came out in May 2001, becoming a huge hit and reaching #1 on the US Billboard 200 Album chart. Their fourth album “10,000 Days” came out in May 2006.
In 1999, Maynard created the band A Perfect Circle and their first album “Mer de Noms” was released in 2000, followed by their second album “Thirteenth Step” in 2003, both of which were certified platinum.
The band’s third album “eMOTIVe” was released in 2004 before they disbanded, but reunited in November 2010 for a tour around the US.
Maynard made his debut film appearance in 1997, when he appeared as himself in the short video “Tool: Ænima”, and in 2000 he appeared in the short music video “A Perfect Circle: Judith”. The year 2005 saw him play the lead character Deputy Lance in the mystery drama film “Sleeping Dogs Lie”, which received mixed reviews, and in 2009 he portrayed Dog Walker in the action thriller film “Crank: High Voltage” which starred Jason Statham and Amy Smart, and which won one award and was nominated for two others. Some of his following roles were in the episode “Re-Animated” of the comedy series “Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!” in 2010, the horror film “Ville” in 2011, and the comedy movie “Queens of the Country” in 2012.
He has recently been cast to portray the Sixth Man in the action movie “XII”, set to be released in the second half of 2020.
Maynard is also a wine maker as he is the owner of Merkin Vineyards and Caduceus Cellars located in Jerome, Arizona. When his mother died in 2003, Maynard scattered her ashes around his vineyards, later naming one of his wines after his late mother – “Nagual del Judith”.
