She’s been working with WKYC for several years and her popularity has also led to other opportunities, especially in the online realm where she has a significant following.
Early Life and Education
Hollie was raised by her parents in Cleveland, and lived in a normal household alongside two siblings. She is close to her parents and her grandparents who visited often, particularly her grandmother who loved making various crafts for her grandchildren, though she passed away sometime in the 2000s. She spent most of her early education in Cleveland, attending Notre Dame Cathedral Latin. As the name connotes, it is a school-sponsored by the religious organization called the Sisters of Notre Dame.
After matriculating from high school, she enrolled at the nearby University Heights-based John Carroll University. The private university is among the top in Midwest US, offering various programs up to master’s level. The school is named after the first US Catholic archbishop John Carroll, who was instrumental in founding many educational institutions in the country. After completing her undergraduate degree, she took up further studies at Mississippi State University, as she’d become interested in having a career as a weather reporter, and completed a degree in Meteorology in 1995.
Work with WKYC
Following her academic studies, Strano worked to gain certification from the National Weather Association (NWA). Those certified by the organization are considered able to start working as broadcasters for live and televised presentations.
After getting approval, she decided that it was best for her to work somewhere closer to home, and began working with the local Cleveland station WKYC. The station dates its history back to the 1940s and serves many areas in Ohio. It’s known for various locally produced programs such as news, documentaries, and children’s programs. She began working for the station’s early morning broadcasts as a part of “Channel 3 News Today”.
She did weather forecasts for the day, often involving her to be at the station as early as 4:30 in the morning. The station also provided her other opportunities to host, as she became a part of the weekday show “Live on Lakeside” which airs at noontime. She joins Alexa Lee in the program that focuses more on lifestyle news and features.
Marriages and Divorces
Hollie’s first marriage was to Brian Toohig whom she met while students in high school. They were together since then, and wed in 2008. They stayed together for three years and had two children together, however, things fell apart leading to their divorce.
Despite the separation, she credits her children for helping cheer her up as she loves being a mom and going home from work to her children
Sometime in the next three years, she started a relationship with Florida-native Alex Giangreco whom she met while on vacation. They married in 2014 in a simple ceremony at Pompano Beach in Florida. After their marriage, she changed her surname to Giangreco and was recognized as that for some point in her career. However, it was another short-lived marriage as she announced to the public that she had separated and was in the process of divorcing, and began using her maiden name Strano once more in broadcasts.
She has been open about how difficult it is to recover from a divorce, but has learned a lot from these failed relationships.
Struggles with Health and Anxiety
In 2019, many of Strano’s followers have been concerned about her condition. She’s been open about frequently going to the doctor to tackle issues of mental health and anxiety, especially since she’s gone through two failed marriages. On one occasion, she was unable to go to work due to what was described as a health scare. While she didn’t elaborate on what happened while she was at work, she later made a public statement declaring that doctors found nothing wrong and that she was ready to go back to work.
She later opened up about her recent struggles with severe anxiety, a problem that she’s been having for a few years now. She was mostly a positive and happy person, but divorces have affected her emotionally. With the encouragement of her parents, she began taking mental health counseling which she credits have helped save her life. She also credits her fans for supporting her through her struggles. She opened up about her ordeal as she felt that she received a blessing despite going through a rough time, and wanted to inspire others as well, especially those considering going for professional help with their severe anxiety.
During her free time, Strano enjoys spending time out, going to the gym or the beach. She is very conscious about her image, especially since she appears frequently in front of the camera. She has professed her love for food and enjoys eating cheeseburgers even if it means that she has to spend more time keeping fit. Her favorite burgers can be found in locations such as B-Spot, Fahrenheit, Urban Farmer, and Red the Steakhouse. She is also a big fan of professional basketball, and follows the National Basketball Association (NBA) team, the Cleveland Cavaliers.
