Early life and education
Dylan was raised in Victoria by his father Todd W. Schmid who is a businessman, and his mother Sherri who is a teacher working at a local high school in Victoria. Dylan has an older brother named Todd ‘TJ’ Jr., who has become an actor as well.
Dylan grew up watching movies and it was when he was six years old that his mother told him how movies are not real, but people simply acting in them, after he got overly emotional when one of his favorite characters in a TV series died. He told his mother he wanted to act, and asked her to let him attend an audition, and although his mother sent his application, he was denied participation and was advised to practice his acting skills at school before attending again.
After winning an acting and singing contest at the age of six, he was allowed to study at Kate Rubin Studios, and after enrolling at a high school, he became a member of the school’s drama club, and started appearing in its plays.
Career as an actor
Dylan actually launched his acting career at the age of six, when he appeared in two short films created by teenagers studying at the Victoria Film School. He won his first lead role the following year in the mini-series entitled “Gibson Gus”. When he was old enough, he began practicing his acting skills at the Kaleidoscope Theater, appearing in Shakespeare’s plays, while he was later invited to portray Prince of York in eight plays with the Victoria Shakespeare Society. Around the same time, he portrayed two characters in the play entitled “The Hobbit”, performed at McPherson Theatre
He went on to portray Flavio, Rodelina’s son in the Pacific Opera Society play entitled “Rodelina”, and when he turned 11, won a two-week acting course at the Australian Institute of Performing Arts, studying under Patrick Day, director of the Young Actors Studio. Dylan amazed everyone with his skill, and after the course was contacted by some of the noted Los Angeles agents such as Melissa Berger Brennan and Amanda MacKay Johnson. Dylan was eventually signed to Clear Talent Group, but as he returned to Canada, he went on to sign with Characters Talent Agency.
He made his debut appearance on the big screen in 2012 when he was cast to portray Baelfire, a recurring character in the TV series “Once Upon a Time”, which follows a young man who moves to a town in Maine where supernatural events are happening. His next role was in the TV series “Fringe” in 2013, which was followed by his appearance in the TV show “R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour”, which stars Jenny Cassady, Dan Payne and Brendan Meyer, and follows R.L. Stine as he makes up tales about haunted dolls, clowns, and werewolves.
