Although he is not yet very well-known, actor Kevin McGarry is well on his way to fame, featuring in many critically acclaimed series. However, many people who notice McGarry only remember him as a handsome heart throb, which when you’re trying to make a name for yourself in Hollywood might not be a bad thing.
Kevin McGarry was born on 19 March 1985 in Kincardine, Ontario, Canada. Making him currently 35 years old, and of Canadian nationality.
McGarry stumbled into acting by accident, when he was mistakenly enrolled into an acting class in his senior year. It was then that McGarry decided that not only was he good at theatre but it was also something he was very passionate about. After high school, in 2007 Kevin received his degree for Creative Writing from George Brown College, and then decided to study Theatre Arts in London at Fanshawe College, before studying in Toronto at the Pro Actors Lab.
McGarry’s first few acting roles didn’t provide much in the way of fame or money – he first appeared in the series ‘Love Bites’ followed by ‘Being Erica’.
The first movie in which he was cast was a tv movie in 2010 ‘Turn the Beat Around’ which is the story of a down and out dancer living in Los Angeles, USA who joins up with the manager of a club to try and bring disco back.
The same year Kevin appeared in ‘Saw: The Final Chapter’, a very popular series of horror movies. Each new ‘Saw’ film follows a new cast that have all been set with a similar task. A group of people are put into a room by a playmaker who goes by the name Jigsaw. They are set with a series of mentally and physically demanding tasks that often requires them to seriously injure themselves or even kill other contestants to progress to the next stage and get closer to being free.
The Jigsaw uses their own lives or the lives of their family to persuade his victims to continue with each task no matter how painful or disturbing it may be. ‘Saw: The final Chapter’ is the story of a man who reached fame by pretending to be one of Jigsaws surviving victims – Jigsaw doesn’t take kindly to this lie, and kidnaps the man who then finds himself playing Jigsaws game. By the end it is apparent that this will be the final game anyone will ever have to play, as the game master is terminally ill.
McGarry’s first notable roll was as Dr Timothy Hudson in the series ‘Open Heart’ in 2015. The series follows Dylan Blake a 16-year-old girl who gets herself into trouble stealing a car, being arrested and receiving community service.
She is ordered to volunteer at a hospital, Open Heart Memorial, where both her sister and mother work as doctors. Her grandparents are on the hospitals board of governors as well as generous benefactors, and the hospital is also the last place her father was seen before his disappearance. Dylan uses her new position at the hospital to try and find out what happened to her father, while uncovering some family secrets along the way.
While playing small roles in between, Kevin was acting from 2016 – 2019 in the series ‘Heartland’, playing Mitch Cutty.
The series is based on the book written by Lauren Brooke and is the story of sisters Lou and Amy Fleming, with ranch hand Ty Borden and their grandfather Jack Bartlett following them through the trials and tribulations of life on their ranch.
In 2020 Kevin played a small role in the critically acclaimed ‘Schitts Creek’, the story of the wealthy Rose family, Johnny, Moira, David and Alexis, who made their money through a video chain store, but who lose all their money when their accountant embezzles and runs away with it all. The family is forced to move to a small town that Johnny bought for David as a joke when he was a child, where they all live in a motel together.
Most recently McGarry has been playing a recurring character in the series ‘When Calls the Heart’. The series is about a young school teacher, Elizabeth Thatcher who comes from a rich family living in the east, and moves to a big city in the west to be the teacher at a small school in a mining town.
Although Kevin is not married, he is still dating his long-time girlfriend Alexandra Herzog, who is originally from Winnipeg in Manitoba, Canada. At the young age of five she began dancing and loved it so much she spent the next thirteen years of her life working hard and studying musical theatre, jazz, tap, modern and ballet.
Alexandra received her Senior Certificate because she was a member of the Cecchetti Society. She was then trained by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, to which she received scholarships in modern dance and ballet.
Herzog made the decision to add acting to her already gruelling training regime after seeing ‘Our Town’, a production at the Manitoba Theatre. She said when she felt and could see the influence the production had on not only herself, but everyone else in the audience, she was inspired to not only take up acting, but also to start studying piano, trombone, theatre and singing.
Since then Alex has been all over Europe on celebrity cruises performing for childrens’ shows. She also appeared as a dancer in two movies, ‘Make it Happen’ and ‘High Stakes’, before deciding to pursue acting training even more by attending Sheridan College to study musical theatre, graduating receiving the E. McFaddin Award as well as high honours. Most recently Herzog’s choreography was played at ‘Heart and Music’ which was a benefit to raise money for The Ovarian Cancer Association in Canada.
