Early life and education
Derek was has raised with his four sisters – Sharee, Marabeth, Katherine, and Julianne, in Salt Lake City by their father Bruce Robert Hough, who is best known for serving as the chairman of the Utah Republican Party, and mother Mari Anne Hough who is a teacher.

Derek became interested in acting at a very early age, and when he turned 12, his parents divorced and decided to send him to London, where he started taking dancing lessons under Corky and Shirley Ballas. After several months his sister Julianne joined him, and Derek stayed in England for the next 10 years. He attended the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts where he also worked on his acting and singing skills, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2007.
Career as a dancer and other ventures
Derek and two of his coaches’ children formed the trio 2B1G – meaning ‘two boys, one girl’ – and competed in England and in the USA, while Derek was learning how to play the piano and the drums during that time, to add to his guitar playing).
His dancing career was officially launched in 2007 when he appeared in the TV show “DanceX”, before joining the show “Dancing with the Stars” airing on ABC. He was paired with Jennie Garth who is an actress, and the two made it to the semi-finals before they were eliminated. He went on to compete in a total of nine seasons, winning six of these which is still a record. For his performance, Derek received two Primetime Emmy Awards for outstanding choreography, and was nominated for seven others.
He launched his acting career in 2001 appearing in the film “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone”, and this was followed by his appearances in films “Rock of Ages” and “Make Your Move 3D”.
He has also appeared in many theatre plays, making his debut in 2006 in “Footloose: The Musical” performed at the Novello Theatre. In 2013 he was invited to star in the dance film “Making Your Move”, which was followed by his recurring role in the musical drama series “Nashville” in 2014. In December 2016, he was chosen to portray Corny Collins in the live musical “Hairspray Live!” and was then invited to serve as a judge for the series “World of Dance”. His latest appearance on TV was in 2019, when he hosted the NBC show “Return to Downtown Abbey: A Grand Event”.
