Phil was raised in the US alongside his brother Alan Swift, who has also become a businessman and who obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Houston. The two brothers were raised by their father who was a lawyer, and their mother who worked as a secretary at a local company.

Phil became interested in law while attending elementary school, as he wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps, however, he became sporting upon enrolling at a high school, at which he played football and tennis. Upon matriculation in 1979, he enrolled at the University of Houston (same as his brother), obtained his Bachelor’s degree in 1983, and ventured into business.

Phil has been keeping the details of his love life hidden from the media’s attention, but it is believed that he met his other half while attending college, and that they dated for over five years before marrying in a small ceremony attended by a few of their closest friends and their family. His wife gave birth to their daughter several months after the wedding, and their son Nic Swift followed two years later. Phil and his wife are living in Weston, Florida while their two children have already married and moved out.
There have been rumors that Phil was unfaithful sometime in the 2000s, and that his wife filed for divorce after finding out.
