He is also sponsored by various companies, including Cloud9. He increased his wealth through a brief career as a stand-up comedian too.
Life before Fame
Sky Williams spent his early years in his hometown of San Jose, the youngest of three children born to Greg and Sharon Williams. His has an elder brother named Nick, and elder sister named Alex.
Sky holds American nationality, belongs to African-American ethnic group, and is a Christian. At the age of three his parents divorced, and he moved with his mother and siblings to Gilroy, California. His mother later remarried, but Sky didn’t get along well with his step-father. As a very bright kid, Sky was a part of the Gifted and Talented Education Program.
From Depression to Video Games
Sky Williams’ problems with depression appeared while he was in the sixth grade.
At the same time, he realized that he was gay, but was afraid to come out to his family, both of which affected a change in his personality, especially as he was abused by his peers, which made him feel worse. Sky moved his focus from his personal issues to video games as soon as he discovered them, and so started making new friends online, while he was playing games. One of the first video games he played was “Super Smash Bros”, published by Nintendo, which features characters from other famous games, such as “Super Mario”, “Kirby”, “Star Fox”, “Donkey Kong”, and “The Legend Of Zelda”.
At the time, he also participated in various gaming tournaments every weekend.
While in high school, Sky Williams developed his love for acting and comedy. He tried himself as a stand-up comedian, and soon distinguished himself by performing original jokes and winning a school talent show. Upon matriculation, he was hired to work as a server at Applebees, where he spent around six years, but concurrently continued to participate in comedy competitions, and eventually reached the fourth place among 400 contestants in Uncle Clyde’s Comedy Contest, at Flappers Comedy Club.
Rise to Fame as a YouTuber
In April 2008, Sky launched his official self-titled YouTube channel, with the intention of promoting himself as a comedian. He started filming videos, and released his first – “I’m Going To Die A Virgin” – in August of that year. He then released another talking about players he meets while playing the video game “League Of Legends”. It went viral, and even topped the game’s page on Reddit, which rocketed him to stardom.
Continued Success and Twitch
He then began making gaming videos, and created his channel on Twitch, a live streaming video site, and began streaming, frequently collaborating with such gamers as VideoGameDunkey, xLeahbee, Sunnysplosion, and Sp4zie.
Some of his most popular videos on YouTube include “Change, is- WOAH DUDE!”, “Knife Cat!”, and “Dunkey will bring them pain.”, among others. Moreover, he has provided comments for some “Smash” tournaments.
