A lot of staff of Conan O’Brien often stay for a long time, as they enjoy working for him and also reap the benefits from the success of his show.
Early Life, Education, and Career Beginnings
Sona is of Armenian descent; while she was born in Montebello, her family later moved to Hacienda Heights, and she grew-up in a close-knit Armenian community in the area. She attended Armenian Mesrobian School located in Pico Rivera in the metropolitan area of Los Angeles.
After matriculating from high school, she took up her bachelor’s degree at the University of Southern California, which is one of the most well-known schools in the area, in particular for being the origin of many modern technologies.
After completing her degree, she then began working at the media company National Broadcasting Company (NBC) where she started as a Page, a year-long paid internship in New York City. NBC is the oldest major network in the US, and one of the biggest networks in the country, with numerous television and radio affiliates. She eventually became an Events and Operations Co-ordinator for the network, and her work led her to be introduced to Conan O’Brien.
Work with Conan
Conan – a long time talent and on-air personality for NBC – was given the chance to succeed Jay Leno, with “The Tonight Show with Conan’ O Brien”.
Before this, he was the host of “Late Night with Conan O’Brien”. With the transition, many of his crew members including Movsesian transferred for the succession. The show received a strong overhaul, and contained many of the elements that made his previous show successful.
However, the executives later started to distrust Conan’s ability to carry on the late-night banner similar to Jay Leno, and after seven month the latter was moved back to the show. Conan was intended to be moved to a later timeslot, but the decision discouraged him, and he refused to work and continue as the host of “The Tonight Show” – NBC ended up paying him $45 million to buy out his contract, ending all associations with the company, which made his iteration the shortest of the entire franchise.
Conan, along with most of his crew, eventually found a new home in TBS, establishing themselves under the show name “Conan”.
Conan and Rise to Fame
Even before the move to “Conan”, Sona was often used in many comedy skits and segments by the late-night host. He loves doing skits that involve other crew members and also loves traveling to various locations with the intent of doing more content for his show, which often ends up in a comedic manner. Due to her constant appearances in the show, she has become a known personality among the show’s fans.
In 2011, she became a part of the documentary “Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop”. The documentary focuses on his tour called The Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour, which he did after his controversy in “The Tonight Show”. The documentary was created by Conan’s longtime friend Rodman Flende,r whom he was classmates with at Harvard, and she was featured prominently throughout the documentary. “Conan” is also known for its special episodes often filming shows in other locations around the world, or showcase segments of Conan’s trip to other countries, some of which have been the biggest hits for him.
In 2015, he and Sona filmed a television special of “Conan” while they were in Armenia, exploring her heritage.
Movsesian continues to work as a part of the “Conan” team, and has now been with TBS for a decade. Along with Conan, there are other long-time personalities within the team, such as sidekick Andy Richter and producer Jordan Schlansky, who has also been a consistent presence in many of Conan’s comedy skits. Like other late-night talk shows, they often discuss celebrities, news stories, and politics in a lighter, more comedic tone.
The format of the show has often been compared to that of other hosts such as David Letterman and Johnny Carson.
The show has also gained enough popularity that numerous high-profile guests appear regularly – some of the most notable have included Mark Hamill, Elijah Wood, Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen, and Norman Reedus. Their international trips and specials from abroad don’t follow the same format, acting mostly like a travel special in which Conan is often seen engaging with locals. Aside from their trip to Armenia, they’ve been to locations such as Qatar, Berlin, Cuba and Italy.
In 2019, they started the series “Conan Without Borders” which saw him travel to Australia, Ghana, and Greenland, and Sona also started a podcast with O’Brien and Matt Gourley called “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend”.
Sona began a relationship with graphic artist Tak Boroyan sometime in the 2010s, and they married in 2018 in Montebello at the Holy Cross Apostolic Cathedral. Their wedding had a bit of documentation, mostly due to his popularity on television, and the wedding was attended by many crew members of “Conan”. She is known to practice Armenian Orthodox Christian beliefs. While she is technically the executive assistant of Conan, the two are very close friends, and the two even engage in several activities outside of work.
