Early life and education

Tichina was raised alongside her sister Zeney in Queens, by their father who worked in the Police Department, and their mother Diane who worked in the sanitation department.

Tichina grew up wanting to become an actress, making her first appearances in elementary school plays, while she continued practicing her skills at the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts. Tichina was also interested in other things such as creative writing, playing soccer, and learning how to play the piano, but upon matriculation in 1987, she didn’t enroll at college but rather focused on a career as an actress.

She actually made her debut film appearance in 1983, portraying Mary in “The Bass Ring”, and then appeared in “The House of Dies Drear” in 1984, the horror comedy musical “Little Shop of Horrors” in 1986, and “Starlight: A Musical Movie” in 1988.

She was praised for her performance as Vera Cook in the romantic comedy “How I Got Into College” in 1989, and then appeared in “Scenes From a Mall” in 1990, and the comedy “Fakin’ da Funk” in 1997, meantime switching to TV.

She was praised for her portrayal of the main character Rochelle in the period sitcom series “Everybody Hates Chris”, shooting it from 2005 to 2009, meantime in 2007 appearing in a single episode of “The Boondocks”, while some of her next roles were in “Sherri” and “Brothers” in 2009, as well as in “Pair of Kings” in 2010. She was nominated for four awards in 2006 for her performance in “Everybody Hates Chris”, winning a Teen Choice Award for TV – Choice Parental Unit and an Image Award for an Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series.

Tichina was also nominated for three other Image Awards in 2008, ‘09 and ‘10.

Other business ventures

Tichina launched her own designer headgear in 1998, calling it “China Moon Rags”, mostly consisting of head bandanas covered with Swarovski crystals. Her designs were worn by many celebrities (who were also her friends) such as Janet Jackson, Michel’le, and Christina Aguilera, however, after Tichina’s daughter was born, she stopped creating the headgear.

Tichina and her sister founded the We Win Foundation in 2013, which aims to help people suffering from systemic lupus erythematosus, which is an autoimmune disease that causes one’s immune system to attack healthy tissue – her sister suffers from it.

She was also a member of the advisory board of the National Parent Association (PTA), which is the largest child advocacy volunteering organization in the USA.

Tichina has formed the band KNOW Pressure together with her three friends, and they are performing all around Los Angeles.

Love life and relationships

On 18 August 1994, Tichina married Lamon Tajuan Brewster, a former professional boxer, after knowing him for two years. It is believed that Lamon was cheating on Tichina with several other women, which is what led to their divorce less than a year later in 1995.

In 2002, Tichina started seeing Carvin Haggins who is a music producer, but they kept their relationship somewhat hidden from the media’s curiosity until Tichina’s pregnancy in 2003.

Her daughter Alijah Kai Haggins was born on 16 March 2004, but Tichina stated that she believed she couldn’t get pregnant because she has the condition called endometriosis. Tichina and Carvin split in 2007.

On 18 August 2012, she married DaRico Hines who is a basketball coach, but they divorced in 2016 after a sex tape featuring DaRico and another woman emerged on the internet without DaRico’s consent.

Tichina grew up being interested in music, mostly listening to jazz and blues as her parents would play it whenever they were at home. At the age of seven, Tichina started singing at her elementary school, and her parents paid for her singing lessons. She is keen on travelling and has been all around the US for work, but enjoys learning about the history of places she visits, as well as tasting local cuisines.

She has been to Europe on several occasions, and visited countries such as Greece and Spain. Tichina likes to read in her spare time, and her favorite books are “Siddhartha” by Herman Hesse, and “Dear John” by Nicholas Sparks.
