Who is Matthew Trebek?
Matthew Trebek is a restaurateur and owner of the New York restaurant Oso Harlem, but he is probably better known to the world as the son of the famous Canadian-American television personality, game show host, and actor, Alex Trebek. Matthew started the restaurant with the help of his business partner Nodar Mosiashvili, along with chef Cassandra Rhodes.

Matthew Trebek was born in 1990 in Los Angeles, California USA, the elder child of Alex Trebek and his wife of 30 years, Jean Currivan, a real estate project manager; he has a sister Emily, born in 1993.
After high school, he enrolled at Fordham University during which time he started working as a bartender, and actually enjoyed the work.
Matthew worked at the Midtown’s Madison & Vine bar, alongside Nodar Mosiashvili, also a bartender, who later became his business partner. Also, he became interested in Mexican cuisine and decided to start a restaurant based on Mexican dishes. He moved to New York and realized the lack of Mexican food restaurants, so with the help of Nodar and chef Cassandra Rodhes, opened the restaurant Oso Harlem in Hamilton Heights, Harlem.

Born George Alexander Trebek on the 22nd July 1940 in Sudbury, Ontario; he is the son of George Edward Trebek and Lucille Lagace. Of Ukrainian and Franco-Ontarian ancestry, he became a naturalized US citizen in 1998. He went to Sudbury High School and later enrolled at the University of Ottawa. He obtained a degree in philosophy in 1961, but during his university years he became interested in broadcast news, and it even before he finished university, Alex started his career at CBC.
Working with CBC during his university days, at one time or another he was an announcer on every show, replacing its regulars.
He moved up a level and even read the national news and appeared on television, covering special events, and could also be heard on CBC radio.
His career as a television host really started in 1963, when he was made the host of the show “Music Hop”. This lasted for a year, before he moved on to other shows, including “CBC Championship Curling”, and “Reach for the Top”, an academic quiz competition for high school students. His first major project was the show “The Wizard of Odds”. As he was becoming more successful, he started hosting other popular shows, including the game show “High Rollers”.

However, Alex made the news in the mid-‘80s, when he was named the host of the show “Jeopardy!”, The first episode with him as the host was aired in 1984, and since then he has hosted over 8,000 episodes of the award-winning game show, which certainly made him a celebrity television personality. Since then, Alex has hosted numerous other shows, including “Classic Concentration” (1987-1991), then “The National Geographic Bee” (1989-2013), and “Game Changers” (2017), among others.

Before marrying Matthew’s mother, Alex was married to a businesswoman, Elaine Callei from 1974 until 1981. They didn’t have children, though Alex became the adoptive father of her daughter Nicky, from her marriage to Louis Callei.
Alex married Jean Currivan in 1990 and three years after Matthew, they welcomed a daughter, Emily.
In March 2019, Alex was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer; he has undergone the treatment, and has recently suspended the show, due to the coronavirus as Alex is in a risk group.
Even before pancreatic cancer, Alex had experienced several health problems, including a few mild heart attacks, and a subdural hematoma which was a result of a fall.
He has supported several humanitarian organizations and movements, which includes a donation of $100,000 to Hope of the Valley Rescue Mission, a homeless shelter in Los Angeles.
