Sean Patrick Thomas was born on the 17th December 1970, in Washington, D.C. USA; he is the son of Carlton Thomas, who is an engineer and worked for DuPont, and his wife Cheryl, who was a financial analyst, also working for DuPont. Both of his parents are Guyanese emigrants, and settled in Wilmington, Delaware upon Sean’s birth.
He is the oldest of three children and went to Brandywine High School in Delaware. After matriculation, he enrolled at the University of Virginia, wanting to study law, but as soon as he got the role in the film “A Raising in the Sun”, Sean decided for acting, and transferred to New York University, where he attended the prestigious Graduate Acting Program at the Tisch School of the Arts. He graduated in 1995, obtaining a Master of Fine Arts degree, having previously obtained a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Virginia.
Career Beginnings
Sean’s career started in the mid-‘90s with minor roles in such TV series as “One Life to Live” (1995), and “New York Undercover” (1996).
After these he switched to roles in films, appearing in the award-winning action drama film “Courage Under Fire” (1996), starring Denzel Washington, Meg Ryan and Lou Diamond Phillips, then in 1997 he featured in another successful film, the action thriller “Conspiracy Theory”, with Mel Gibson, Julia Roberts and Patrick Stewart as the stars of the film. Before the ‘90s ended, Sean had a memorable role in the romantic drama film “Cruel Intention” (1999), starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, and Reese Witherspoon.
Rise to Stardom
Sean’s career reached a whole new level with the start of the new millennium; he landed his first lead role as Derek in the romantic drama film “Save the Last Dance” (2001), in which he portrayed a black teen from the South Side who already had problems with the law.
His co-star was Julia Stiles, and the film attracted positive reviews, receiving more than a dozen nominations and a few awards, of which Sean himself won a couple, including Young Hollywood Award in the category for Standout Performance – Male. A year before he had landed the role of Det. Temple Page in the crime-drama series “The District”, and through 2004 featured in all 89 episodes of the Primetime Emmy Award-nominated series. In 2002 he was Jimmy James in the comedy-drama film “Barbershop”, and repeated his role in the sequel “Barbershop 2: Back in Business”.

In 2012 he landed the role of Solomon Vessida in the TV crime-drama series “Ringer”, and the same year starred in the thriller film “Murder on the 13th Floor”.
Sean established himself in Hollywood and producers started coming to him with offers – in 2014 he starred in the horror-thriller film “Deep in the Darkness”, while in 2016 he appeared in the next installment of the “Barbershop” franchise, “Barbershop: The Next Cut”.
