He was raised in Santa Barbara by his father – who is a former US Marine and who fought in the Vietnam War – and his mother who is a housewife. Together with Jarred Taylor, an army veteran, Mat launched the brand Article 15 Clothing which creates funny clothes for military people, while they are now also selling their own whiskey, rum, and wheat beer. In 2016, Mat starred in the crowd-funded film entitled “Range 15” alongside other veterans and Medal of Honor recipients such as Marcus Luttrell, who is the writer of the book “Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of SEAL Team 10”. At the GI Film Festival, the movie won the award for best film.
In 2014, Mat founded the Black Rifle Coffee Company with Evan Hafer, a former Green Beret, and the company started working well in 2017, after gaining endorsement from Donald Trump Jr., and after promising to hire 10,000 veterans (as a response to Starbucks promising to hire 10,000 refugees).
