Mary was raised an only child by her father who was a bus driver and her mother who was a housewife. She grew up interested in modelling after becoming a cheerleader in high school, however, as she was very good at drawing, she started taking drawing and painting lessons too, and changed her focus.
Upon matriculation, she enrolled at Ripon College, Wisconsin, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in liberal arts in 1967. While she was still attending college, Mary started cooking, and enjoying it so much that she changed her mind again, deciding to become a chef.
Mary has been working as an illustrator for years now, while she has mostly been focused on her job as a chef.
