Childhood and education
JayR was born to a Philippino father who was a doctor, and an Australian mother who was teaching at a high school. He spent his early years in Manila before his family moved to Queensland in Australia, where he enrolled at a public high school, and was physically active playing soccer and tennis while being one of the top students in his class. He became interested in acting while there, and was a member of his school’s drama club, appearing in nearly all the plays performed at school and several performed at a local theatre.
Upon matriculation in 2009, he didn’t to enroll at a college, but pursued his career as an actor.
Career as an actor
While he was still studying, JayR was working in Sydney in the hospitality industry so that he could financially support himself, while he was attending auditions for roles in both movies and TV series.
He launched his acting career in 2009, when he portrayed a trapped student in the romantic drama series “Summer Bay (Home and Away)” which starred Ray Meagher, Lynne McGranger and Emily Symons, about the people living in Summer Bay, Sydney, New South Wales.

The series has been airing since 1988, and has won 45 awards and has been nominated for 104 others. In 2012, he played Alan in the short science fiction drama film “Your Life Again”, directed and written by Simone Pietro Felice and which starred Amie Bransgrove and Jes Laverack. It is about a boy who is not happy with his life, and has strange dreams each night. The year 2014 saw JayR play The Drag Queen in the short drama film “Showboy”, which is about a young man struggling with depression after his mother passes away.
In 2015, JayR appeared as Jacob in the short comedy film “The Wake of Leigh Joel Scott” which was directed and written by Leigh Joel Scott, and starred Maite Bassa, Andrew Groundwater and Kate Hardy, while the same year saw him portray the supporting character Dan in the romantic drama sport film “Drown”, the story of three beach lifesavers whose night out becomes dangerous and life-threatening. The movie was a hit, winning six awards while it was nominated for three others.
The following year saw JayR portray Qi in the comedy drama series “Rake” which starred Richard Roxburgh, Matt Day and Kate Box, about a lawyer who is defending those who have committed the worst crimes such as bigamy and cannibalism. The series won eight awards, and was nominated for 30 others.
One of his latest roles has been in the romantic comedy film “Always Be My Maybe” in 2019, which starred Ali Wong and Randall Park and which is about Sasha and Marcus who start dating after seeing each other for the first time in 15 years.
The movie won a Chicago Independent Film Critics Circle Award for Best Original Song and was nominated for two other awards.

It is widely believed that JayR is transgender, because he is a man who appears to be keen on dressing up as a girl and putting his make-up on. In one of his interviews, he stated that he is identifying as non-binary and uses the pronouns ‘he’ and ‘they’. He hasn’t talked about whether he is attracted to men or women, but those who are non-binary are usually attracted to both genders, and as JayR is a supporter of the LGBT community, it is widely believed that he is bisexual.
