Gordon Ramsey Bio and Early Life
Gordon James Ramsay was born on 8 November 1966, in Johnstone, Renfrewshire, Scotland, to mother Helen (née Cosgrove), a nurse, and a father, Gordon James Ramsay, a swimming pool manager, shopkeeper, and a welder. Gordon grew up in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, along with two sisters and one brother, where his family finally settled due to his father’s aspirations and failures.
Gordon started playing football (soccer) at age 12, and was chosen to play under-14 football for Warwickshire. He even had a trial with his boyhood club Glasgow Rangers, but his footballing career aspirations ended because of injuries.
Early Cooking Career and Big Success as a Head Chef
Ramsay initially worked as a pot washer in a local Indian restaurant, where his sister also worked as a waitress. After acknowledging that he’d not succeed in football, at the age of 19 Ramsay enrolled at North Oxfordshire Technical College to study hotel management. His first cooking job was at the Wroxton House Hotel as a commis chef, and he then moved to London where he worked at various restaurants, including Harveys.
In 1993, Ramsay had already established himself as one of the best cooks in London, and received an offer to become head chef at La Tante Claire in Chelsea, London, a three-Michelin-starred restaurant.
Five years later, Gordon opened his first restaurant named Restaurant Gordon Ramsay in Chelsea, and in 2001 it gained its third Michelin star, Ramsay being the first Scot to achieve that. Ramsay’s empire quickly expanded, as he continued opening restaurants in various locations, not only in the UK but also in the US and other countries, and as of 2020, Ramsay owns over 30 restaurants in England, the US, Ireland, Italy, France and Canada, among others.
Television, Hell’s Kitchen and MasterChef
Gordon Ramsay first appeared on television in the documentary “Boiling Point” (1998), but is best known as a creator and producer of “MasterChef” and “Hell’s Kitchen” – he started producing both series in 2011, and they are still running. The “MasterChef” is about a nationwide search for the best home cooks in the US – only one of 50 hopefuls can become a culinary star. It won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Art Direction for a Multi-Camera Series in 2013. “Hell’s Kitchen” is about aspiring young chefs who must go through rigorous cooking challenges and dinner services set by Gordon Ramsay at his restaurant in Hollywood.
The show has earned five Primetime Emmy Award nominations, and won the BAFTA Award in 2005 for Best Features for his “Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares,” while in 2017, he won Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Program for “MasterChef Junior.”

In 2008, Ramsay had a near-death experience while in Iceland when he lost his footing and fell during a descent of an 85ft (26 m) cliff, landing in the icy water underneath. Fortunately he was thinking fast, and removed his heavy boots and waterproof clothes and managed to get to the surface of the water after being down for about 45 seconds. Ramsay is a big football fan of the Scottish giants Glasgow Rangers, and London-based club, Chelsea. He also follows Major League Baseball teams from Los Angeles, the Dodgers and the Angels. Even though there were rumors of Gordon bullying his son, that story is unconfirmed. We found that the only time he was strict with his children was when he didn’t allow them to fly first-class, because they still hadn’t achieved anything to earn that status. So, we can say that he is perhaps a rather strict father, but we can’t say he is a bully.
