Early life and education
Peter was raised an only child in Camp Springs in Maryland by his father Walter Bergman who was serving in the US Navy as an officer when Peter was born, and his mother Carlotta who is a housewife. His parents later split (didn’t divorce) for unknown reasons, but got back together – Peter lived with his mother for that year while his parents were living at different locations.
He attended Crossland Senior High School, where he was physically active excelling at soccer, while he was also interested in acting, appearing in most of the school plays while being encouraged by his professors to pursue a career in acting.
Upon matriculation, he focused on becoming an actor, and practiced acting at The American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York.
Career as an actor
He launched his acting career in 1979 when he auditioned to play Dr. Jeff Martin in the TV series “All My Children”, but was eventually chosen to play the lead role as Dr. Cliff Warner, portraying him until 1987, and for his performance he was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award for an Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
He returned to the series in 1988 and 1989 – the most notable thing about his character was that he married the same girl, Nina four times as they divorced three times, and when the show ended they were still married.
He made his debut film appearance in 1982 in portraying Larry in “Fantasies” 1982, and in 1986 appeared in a commercial for Vicks Formula 44, saying ‘I’m not a doctor, but I play one on TV’ – the commercial became the best that the Vicks Formula 44 brand has ever made.
Peter’s next role in a movie came in 1989 when he portrayed Brant in “Money, Power, Murder”, and became famous worldwide that year after he started playing Jack Abbott in the romantic drama TV series “The Young and the Restless”, which also stars Doug Davidson, Eric Braeden, and follows two clans, Newman and Abbot living in the made-up Genoa City. Peter won a Daytime Emmy Award for an Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 1991 for his performance, and a Soap Opera Digest Award for an Outstanding Lead Actor in 1993, while he was nominated for two other Daytime Emmy Awards and one Soap Opera Digest Award, and altogether over 20.
He played Warren Taylor in the film “Danielle Steel’s Palamino” in 1991, which was followed by his portrayal of Jack Abbott in the episode “The Heather Biblow Story” of the TV series “The Nanny” in 1997 – it starred Fran Drescher and Charles Shaughnessy and followed a cosmetics saleswoman who starts working as a nanny of three children after being laid-off from her former job.
Peter went on to portray Jack Abbot in two more TV series “The Bold and the Beautiful” in 1998 and “The King of Queens” in 2001, which were also his last two roles before he decided to solely focus on starring in the TV series “The Young and the Restless”.
Love life and wife
In 1976, Peter married Christine Ebersole, an actress and a singer best known for appearing in the musical “42nd Street” and in the sitcom “Sullivan & Son”, and the two were together until 1981 when they divorced. Rumor has it that when Peter became famous, he started seeing other women, while another rumor has it that Christine didn’t want any children at the time which is why Peter filed for divorce.
He met Mariellen Bergman in 1983 and the two married two years later in 1985 at a ceremony attended by only the two’s closest friends and family. In 1987, Mariellen gave birth to their son Connor, while their daughter Clare followed two years later. Mariellen and Peter are currently living in Los Angeles, California while Claire and Connor have moved out over a decade ago.

He enjoys being physically active, and is spending most of his free time working out at the gym while he is also playing a variety of sports including tennis, boxing and golf. He occasionally plays video games with his friends and colleagues for fun.
