Childhood and education
Vic was raised in San Diego alongside his younger brother Mike Fuentes, their half-sister and two half-brothers, by their father Victor Gamboa Fuentes who was a jazz singer, and their mother Vivian K. Fuentes who was a painter.
Vic was seven when he received his first guitar, and started learning to play it – he spent several hours practicing every day. He studied at Mission Bay High School at which he wasn’t very sporting, as he preferred to practice singing and acting as well as playing video games. Upon matriculation in 2001, Vic enrolled at San Diego State University to study graphic design, however, he dropped out to pursue his career as a musician, when his band Before Today signed a contract with Equal Vision Records.
Career as a singer
Vic launched his career as a musician while still attending Mission Bay High School, as he was a member of the punk band 3 Simple Words. In 1998, he and his brother Mike founded their own band Early Times – after releasing three extended plays (EPs), the band had to be renamed for copyright violations, and Vic chose Before Today as the new name. They signed a deal with Equal Vision Records, and released their debut full-length album “A Celebration of an Ending” in 2004, but two years later the band disbanded.
Vic continued making music with his brother, and the duo’s debut song, “A Flair for the Dramatic” came out in 2007. They then started collaborating with Pierce the Veil, releasing three albums with them entitled “Collide with the Sky”, “Misadventures” and “Selfish Machines”. Vic and Mike were also members of the supergroup Isles & Glaciers, but which released only a single EP “The Hearts of Lonely People” in 2010 before disbanding.
Vic’s first appearance was in the 2007 video game “Tony Hawk’s Proving Ground”, while he also wrote the game’s song “I’d Rather Die Than Be Famous”; in 2011, he appeared in the music video “Pierce The Veil: Just The Way You Are”.
The year 2012 saw him play the lead character in the short musical drama “Pierce the Veil: King for a Day”, written and directed by Drew Russ, and which is about Vic and Kellin fighting their evil boss. The following year saw Vic appear in another short music video – “Pierce the Veil: Bulls in the Bronx”.
He then appeared in the 2013 music documentary movie “This Is a Wasteland”, directed by Dan Fusselman who also starred in the film alongside Vic and his brother Mike – it follows Pierce the Veil’s tour around the globe.
In 2015, Vic wrote the song “King For A Day” for two video games – “Rock Band 4” and “Guitar Hero Live” – and in 2016 he wrote the song “Circles” for a single episode of the music comedy talk-show “Conan”.
