Richard Trethewey first rose to fame in 1979, by appearing alongside his father Ron and uncle John in the world-famous home improvement TV series entitled “This Old House,” and then in its spin-offs “Inside This Old House” and “Ask This Old House.” In early 2023, he’s the very face of the franchise, having partaken in as many as 960 episodes to date, alongside the second longest-recurring crew member Norm Abram, with 945 episodes.

The media brand “This Old House” provides home improvement content through a variety of channels such as television shows, a magazine, and a website. The company is based in Stamford, Connecticut, and the TV series is shown on Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) in the US, documenting the progress of remodeling projects undertaken by homeowners over a series of weekly episodes, in which Trethewey and the rest of the crew are instrumental.

“This Old House” was originally created by the Boston-based PBS station WGBH-TV, and produced by them from its inception in 1979 until 2001. Time Inc. then acquired the television assets, and formed a new entity called “This Old House Ventures”. WGBH continued to distribute episodes to PBS until 2019, but from the first episode of Season 41, the responsibility of distribution was passed to WETA-TV. Warner Bros. Domestic Television is in charge of distributing the series to commercial TV stations through broadcast syndication.

“This Old House” magazine was launched in 1995 by Time Inc., and is centered on offering helpful tips and advice for home improvement, renovation and decoration, which helped the franchise expand onto another medium, and subsequently attract a greater audience.

In 2016, Time Inc. sold the franchise to an executive named Eric Thorkilsen and private equity firm called TZP Growth Partners, but retained a unique partnership contract with its former owner. “This Old House Ventures” was ultimately acquired by Roku – a popular streaming service – on 19 March 2021.

The makings of a legend

Growing up with a versatile handyman to look up to, Richard pretty much had his future cut out for him from the get-go – all he had to do was reach out and grab it. Naturally, he took great interest in carpentry and other types of handiwork that made up his father’s day-to-day obligations, learning the ropes of home improvement before his peers even understood what those words meant.

Richard Trethewey was born in 1956, in Dedham, Massachusetts USA, and at a suitable age, joined his father and uncle’s plumbing company Trethewey Brothers. He eventually became registered as a master plumber in his state, following a string of successes over the years in his father’s employ.

The brothers were eventually invited to lend their expertise to the production of “This Old House” – at the time just a peculiar young TV series that held some promise. As the show skyrocketed towards international fame, Richard appeared to have found his true calling, choosing to remain with the crew and build his career on television instead.

Richard was interviewed about the extensive history of his family in the plumbing business, and fans were elated to learn just how embedded this profession is in his bloodline. Talking about the company, he revealed that he’s a fourth-generation plumber, explaining how ‘it was started in 1902 by my great grandfather and his brother, hence Trethewey Brothers.’

The great grandson wasn’t going to fall far from the tree either, which was evident from a very early age. He revealed that ‘back in the third grade, when the teacher asked us to draw what we wanted to be when we grew up, I drew myself as a plumber.’

Remarking at how the drawing depicts him with an unrealistic height, he said ‘clearly, I thought I was gonna be much taller.’ His father fully supported this career choice, allowing young Richard to accompany him to work and learn the craft early on. Specifically, Richard explained ‘every summer, from when I was like 11, maybe 12, I would go with my dad to work, and sweep or cut pipe, this was always part of my life.’

As for the TV series that cemented his name in the industry, he said that it ‘came about so serendipitously. We had the established plumbing and heating company in Boston, and we got a phone call from Public Television Boston.’

The woman on the phone asked for Trethewey Brothers to partake in their brand-new TV show, but with the caveat that ‘we have no money, we’re Public Television, so you’d have to work for nothing.’ This didn’t seem to bother Trethewey Sr., however, with Richard saying that ‘my dad got on line and goes ‘You know what, it sounds great. Yeah. We’d love to.’ He hangs up and I say ‘Why’d you say yes to that?’’

His father’s reasoning was that, because they were having a good year, it’s not like the business would go down the drain if they tried out something new. The only issue with the plan was that Ron couldn’t help feeling uncomfortable in front of the camera, so the thought of being filmed every day gave him anxiety that rendered his nights sleepless.

It was soon decided that Richard should be the face of the company instead, which turned out to fit him like a glove. ‘There’s something really magic about looking at a building, figuring out what to put in there, fighting it into the building, getting it to go in there perfectly,’ he said, explaining what it’s really all about for him.

The main pleasure for Richard is that ‘you know that these people will be comfortable in every season, night and day, 24/7, 365, because you did the right thing for that building, so that juices me.’ His sons Evan and Ross also followed these footsteps, which he mentioned as well, saying ‘and I think that’s what triggered both of my boys to get into the game, because it’s an industry where there’s always gonna be new stuff coming.’

A little business, mostly pleasure

He also gave away a public secret, which apparently not many fans were aware of, as his name is generally only associated with home renovation. He said ‘I don’t know if people know that I’m also a long-distance sailor. I’ve sailed a race to Bermuda, which is 600 miles (965 kilometers) straight out to sea, about six or eight times.’

Understandably, Richard enjoys sailing because it has a similar concept to what he does for a living, which he explained as an ‘unbelievable engineering challenge, which I love. You gotta make sure every system keeps working. It sort of changes my view. It raises my horizon a little bit.’

Finally, what this plumbing legend enjoys more than anything is spending time with his extensive family. He said ‘For me, the next joy in my life is grandchildren. ‘Cause it connects me right back to my father, you know, it keeps that line going, so it’s really fun to see the next generation. It’s pretty cool.’

Aside from that, Richard has a rather active Twitter account, on which he posts all kinds of helpful advice, and even uses the platform to promote various non-profit undertakings that strive to improve the living standards of those less fortunate.

For example, he retweeted a post from the “This Old House” official Twitter page, which promotes the rehousing of former US soldiers who find themselves in financial trouble. Called Homes For Our Troops, and it operates all over the country, being one of the most successful veteran aid programs active today.

Kevin stated ‘As we wrap another #TOH project let’s take a moment to recognize this guy – @charliesilvatoh. He has done so much more than just keep this project going. He has kept another handful of projects going and most importantly he’s keeping the Silva Bros. legacy alive. Thanks Charlie.’

Some of the most popular articles related to home improvement on the entire web are either directly inspired by Richard, or they contain his advice verbatim. Such is the case with this BuzzFeed article entitled “19 Helpful Tips And Tricks From The Experts At “This Old House” That Will Blow Your Mind,” in which Trethewey is mentioned as one of ‘TOH legends.’

Richard’s most recent year in show business

On 26 April 2022, it was revealed by Roku that the series would be receiving its to-date most prestigious prize – the Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Up until that point, it had accumulated 117 Emmy award nominations, of which they’d won 20. Richard Trethewey is one of the few honorary cast and crew members who got to receive this truly rare honor, including his sons.

The Tretheweys of 2023 take their success to even higher levels than those before, with RST Thermal operating at full force. This company was formed by Richard himself after he left Trethewey Brothers in 1990, and the seat of president has since been passed to his son Evan, while the legend himself is the vice president.

Today they operate in the New England area, around Maine, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island, providing technical and sales support to various manufacturers of heating and cooling products.

Richard himself remains fully committed to “This Old House,” even after almost a full 45 years. The show’s audience has literally never stopped growing, and in 2023 Richard’s fanbase rivals that of some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry.

Reigning supreme on top of the driver list on streetoutlawsokc.com, Ryan Martin is by far the most successful Oklahoma City (OKC) group member, having been declared champion of several “Street Outlaws: No Prep Kings” tournaments thus far. He’s been captivating the hearts of this franchise’s vast audience all around the world for just over five years, as of early 2023.

Ryan’s nearly unbeatable 2010 5^th Gen Camaro SS with a twin turbo engine called Fireball was seen on most of the famous race tracks that “Street Outlaws” members have frequented over the years, blowing the competition out of the water on most of them.

The machine sports a rather impressive Pro Line racing HEMI engine, as well as the ProCharger F3-136 supercharger, which boosts the engine up to some of the most impressive power ratings ever seen in “Street Outlaws” and its spin-offs.

Martin initially taught drivers how to dominate the track, most of whom have also ended up in the show, including Jackie Knox and Freakin’ Rican – some of the quickest climbing competitors among the cream of the crop of drag racing. He eventually saw the potential in taking his own place among the stars, and promptly got to work on securing the #1 spot.

This glory and fame come with a substantial amount of risk, however, and the stereotype that everyone in their profession eventually crashes didn’t elude Ryan either. According to Martin’s own Q&A on his business’ website, written prior to a few crashes that he experienced, Ryan answered ‘Have you ever wrecked your car?’ with ‘I’ve had a few close calls, but I’ve been very lucky to not have wrecked. In this industry its less of an ‘if’ and more of a ‘when’.’

His words turned out to be prophetic later down the line, as a series of life-threatening mishaps on the track threatened the very existence of his life and career. Fans will at least be comforted to know that, being the absolute professional that he is, Ryan keeps safety among his top priorities, which is what made the crucial difference throughout these unfortunate events.

The Lizzy Musi collision

Misfortune struck one night during the filming of “Street Outlaws: No Prep Kings,” as outlined by Discovery Channel’s video from 18 October 2022. Just as before any race, the series stars made sure all their affairs were in order, preparing their machines to growl down the track in the blink of an eye.

Ryan was feeling confident as per usual, stating ‘We got the hot tune-up in this thing. We have a good race track, the sun’s going down. This is gonna be a good race one way or the other.’ As he took the car out for an engine warm-up and to position it on the track, the surrounding crew members covered their ears due to how loud the engine was.

Regarding his opponent for the night, Lizzy Musi, he said ‘So there’s been seasons where she’s had my number and kicked my ass all year. I feel like I’ve come to turn the corner with her on that, and I feel like we’ve had her number for the last couple of races.’

As the season was nearing its finale, preparations were being made for tuning the competing vehicles to their utmost settings, allowing for a performance that can stand up to the best of the best who remained in the competition. To that end, Ryan stated ‘We got a good finals tune-up that I think will give these guys a run for their money. Hey, if she goes around us, she got the faster car, it is what it is.’

Tension began to mount when the cars rolled up to the starting line in the second race of the season’s semi-finals, both machines tweaked to the maximum and ready to rumble. Right as all eight wheels sped off the black concrete, it became clear to discerning eyes that Martin had a slight advantage over his female opponent, but it was nothing that could’ve decided the race at that point.

Both drivers gave their best and floored the gas pedals down the entire length of the track, and right before the parachutes were ejected out of the vehicles’ rear ends, Lizzy gave in to the hardly controllable right-side swerve and bumped her car into Ryan’s, causing the crowd to begin shouting in panic. In spite of the ruckus, the announcer made it clear that Martin got the win light.

However, as much of a close call as it was to practically collide two mountains of metal raging at unthinkable speeds, both of the drivers managed to park safely and come out of their seats unscathed. Since this mishap was mostly Lizzy’s fault, she immediately made her way towards Ryan with the intention of apologizing.

Her colleague spoke first and asked if she’s alright, to which Musi replied ‘Yeah, you?’ Martin said ‘I’m good, my car’s f***ed up but it’s all good.’ As Lizzy kept saying ‘Sorry’ over and over, he just hugged her and responded ‘It’s okay, we just racin’, it’s all good.’

Still, Ryan asked to confirm whether he got the win light, saying ‘Yeah, yeah, I wasn’t sure, it was close.’ He then looked up at Musi and asked ‘I guess yours was moving around, huh?’ One of Martin’s colleagues checked the damaged side of the car’s frame, and added that it was ‘sitting on the tire.’

Ryan then uttered the most important statement of the night, remarking ‘Man how lucky are we that we ran into each other at 200 miles an hour (320 kph) and didn’t lose f***ing control.’ Both of the drivers agreed that the situation could’ve gone a lot worse, and that keeping it together throughout the ordeal is an important mutual accomplishment.

Right after they spoke, it was time for Martin to explain how the accident actually took place. He said ‘Lizzy and I go up, we’re pretty stage, green light drops, we take off, I could feel the car drifting towards the center. And then boom, I feel something. She straight up ran into me.’ Of course, he doesn’t really have a habit of being a bad sport or blaming someone else, so the review of the accident continued in a much less condemning tone.

He stated ‘It wasn’t all her fault. We crossed the stripe together, both going towards the middle of the racetrack. She just went a little farther than I did, and that’s just racing, it’s just part of it. It could’ve been way worse.’

Still, Martin’s crew ended up with the issue of having to fix the quarter panel that was caved in, whose pressure on the tire made the vehicle impossible to operate. Since the next race was coming up pretty soon, the group had to combine their best efforts to see the vehicle enter the finale with a chance at victory.

The recent Australian accident

After winning their third “Street Outlaws: No Prep Kings” championship in a row, Ryan and his team made their way to Perth, Australia for the filming of the series’ sixth season, hoping to secure the fourth trophy as well.

The journey has been thoroughly documented on Ryan’s YouTube channel, which has way over 100,000 subscribers and a regular viewership of 50,000 or more per video. One of the most important ones, uploaded on 18 March 2023, entitled “Koalas And Krashes Perth Australia,” details the accident that took place during Ryans test runs of his trusty Fireball Camaro.

The roof camera shows the vehicle reaching regular race speeds on the empty track, near the end of which Ryan begins to lose control over the car. It seems that the issue of swerving has struck again, except this time the fault is fully with Ryan himself.

The Fireball crossed the middle strip that separates the two vehicle tracks, eventually crashing into the fortified safety wall. However, the moment of impact wasn’t shown in the video, most likely due to YouTube’s policies on extreme content.

Various emergency crews are promptly seen heading over, with Ryan’s injuries still unknown to everyone who watched the incident unfold. He was fortunately intact, which is mostly thanks to the safety precautions taken when installing the driver cage.

The front of the car, took the brunt of the impact however, with its fender laying some distance away from the vehicle itself, revealing that the front of the massive engine had also been damaged to serious proportions.

The team then had to get the car back into the garage and conduct the necessary repairs as soon as possible, since it’s the general rule of the franchise that no driver will be waited on past the due date, or given any free passes.

The crew were stumped by the developments, with Ryan himself stating ‘What to do? It’s like the absolute worst time to crash this car. The worst place and the worst time.’ This is because the specialists who usually repair Ryan’s Camaro all live and work in the US, and none of them followed the team to Perth.

A member of the crew suggested that he’d have to ‘see what’s possible,’ getting ready to go on a headhunt across Sydney and Melbourne in search of a viable mechanic who can work on the chassis with enough speed and expertise for the car to be in perfect shape on its performance day. Fortunately, their friend Frank was already on a plane to Australia, and was going to arrive in a matter of hours.

Talking about the incident, Ryan explained that ‘So, we’re here at Perth Motorplex, first day for us in Australia was our test day, and we got to meet some of the fans, and things like that. On our third hit today, we had a little mishap.’

More specifically, he said ‘After the stripe, after I shut the car down, it made a hard move towards the wall. I tried to correct it, couldn’t correct it in time. We smacked the wall.’ Martin also had some good news, stating that ‘the car’s hurt, but it’s not terrible, it’s fixable.’

Even with the friend coming over, they decided that it’d be best to take the car ‘somewhere in Melbourne.’ All in all, the crew was prepared to give their all so as to make the last three races remaining for the event in Australia.

To placate the worried fans, Martin said ‘I appreciate all of you guys who have reached out. I’m totally fine, I’ve not a scratch on me, but the car is injured, so, it could’ve been a lot worse.’ There was also some good news regarding how long it would take them to render the car operational again.

He explained that ‘After tearing it apart and moving the blower and the fuel cell and everything out of the way, I don’t think it’s gonna take much to fix it. The biggest hurdle we’re gonna try to get by is just find that front clip.’

As mentioned, the issue wouldn’t have been hard to fix in the US, but Australia wasn’t normally dealing in the parts that Ryan and his team use for their vehicle. It was hence going to be a bumpy ride tracking down everything that’s required in a country that maybe doesn’t even produce or import it.

Ryan’s 2023 so far

According to one of Ryan’s most recent Instagram posts, from 26 March 2023, the car seems to be in superb shape. With that in mind, it looks like he won’t miss out on any important races, while his business is also experiencing a boom.

His aforementioned website offers six very distinct builds at varying prices for any would-be racers with a massive chunk of cash to part with, although one can be even less than $10,000. It remains to be seen whether the Fireball Camaro can secure its fourth-in-a-row trophy.

Shaun is a versatile American singer, actor, movie producer and writer, who hit the scene in the 1970s in a big way, and became a popular teen idol whose face graced the covers of many teen magazines in particular.

As an actor Shaun is well known for his role in several television series, such as “The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries” from 1977 to 1979, “Breaking Away” from 1980 to 1981, and “General Hospital in 1987, as well as several TV movies including “Once Upon a Texas Train” and “Roots: The Gift” in 1988.

Shaun has followed his dreams and, by all accounts, created the life he desired. Here we’re going to delve into what he’s been doing since his teen years, and what he’s up to now.

Shaun Cassidy’s family and upbringing

Shaun Paul Cassidy was born on 27th September 1958, in Los Angeles, California into a family of high-profile artists. When Shaun achieved fame, his family were already famous and each a raging success in their own right. His Tony award-winning father was Jack Cassidy, an actor, singer and theater director, and his mother, Shirley Jones is a well-known singer and Oscar winning actress, who co-starred with Shaun’s half-brother, David Cassidy, an actor, songwriter and musician, in the famous 1970s musical sitcom, “The Partridge Family”. Shirley celebrated her 89th birthday on the 31st March 2023. Shaun also has another three half-brothers, Patrick, Ryan and Beau Cassidy.

Shaun was still in Beverley Hills High School when he signed up with Warner Bros. Records and released his first, self-titled solo album in 1977. The album “Born Late” featured the hit tracks “Hey Deanie” and “Do You Believe in Magic, and the albums “Under Wraps” followed in 1978 and then “Room Service”, which didn’t hit the charts.  He had a concert tour in 1979, after which Warner Bros. Records released a live album, “That’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Live” featuring tracks from the concert and his studio albums. His last album, “Wasp” was released in 1980, but didn’t have much of an impact.

Shaun’s father died in 1976 at the age of 49 in a tragic fire; it’s reported that Shaun had a difficult relationship with his father, who had suffered mental illness for many years. Shaun was devastated when David died in 2017 after a long struggle with alcoholism that ended in liver failure.

Shaun Cassidy forges a new career path

At the age of 22, Shaun left his music career behind him and went into theater – he and his brother David acted alongside each other for a year in the Broadway musical show, “Blood Brothers”, then once again, whilst working as a theater performer, Shaun’s career took a new direction when he wrote his first script, “American Gothic”, which became a classic cult horror series. His newfound role and a dream he had had for years as writer/producer brought on the creation of the 400 AD Roman invasion fantasy series called “Roar” in the late ‘90s. That was followed by a string of TV movies and series in the early 2000s, including “Cold Case” and “The Agency”. In 2005 he created the science fiction TV series, “The Invasion of the Body Snatchers”, then “Blue Bloods” in 2011, and “Emerald City” in 2017.

Shaun wrote eight episodes from 2018 to 2022 for the medical drama series “New Amsterdam“, which was released on 25th September, 2018 and became a global success. It’s grand finale was screened at the end of Season 5 after 89 episodes on 17th January 2023. For those who didn’t get to see this highly popular series, it’s still available for viewing on Netflix, where it quickly rose to the top slot as the most watched TV show in the US. It has been nominated for several awards and won the CinEuphoria Award in 2022, two for The Hollywoood Critics Association TV Awards in 2021 for best broadcast network series, drama, and Media Access Award in 2019.

Shaun Cassidy’s loves, marriages and family

Being a teen heartthrob ensured that Shaun, at 5ft 11ins (180 cm) with light brown feathered hair and blue eyes, was surrounded by a bevy of adoring fans. One of his first flames was the well-known American actress Jamie Lee Curtis, whom he met on the set of “The HardyBoys/Nancy Drew Mysteries” and who had just starred in “Halloween”. Both were rising stars at the time, and Jamie went on to forge a great career in a long list of films such as “A Fish Called Wanda” and “True Lies”. They only dated a few months and broke up apparently because of their demanding work schedules, but still remain friends to this day.

In December 1979 Shaun married Ann Pennington, an American glamour model who already had a daughter, Jessica, born in 1970. Together Shaun and Ann had a daughter, Caitlin in 1981 and a son, Jake in 1985, but the marriage didn’t last, and they divorced in July 1993.

Next up came Susan Diol, an American actress who is known for the science fiction series “Quantum Leap”. They married on 7th May 1995, and had a daughter, Juliet in 1998, but their marriage didn’t make seven years and they divorced on 1st March 2003.

On 28th August 2004, Shaun married American producer Tracey Lynne Turner, after they’d been dating for a couple of years. They tied the knot in a private ceremony in Santa Barbara, and they have four children, sons Caleb born in 2005 and Roan in 2006, and daughters Lila born in 2008 and Mairin in 2011.

Tracey was born on 13th March 1975 and is an attractive brown-eyed blonde. She produced “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in 1986, and “Cover Me: Based on the True Life of an FBI Family” in 2000.

One could say Shaun was third time lucky, and the couple will be celebrating 19 years together this year. As a dad with eight children and a busy work schedule to boot, Shaun puts his family first. He declared in an interview with Oprah Winfrey, “They are the realization of my dream. My family’s my dream.”

What’s Shaun Cassidy doing now?

Shaun and his family have been living in the Santa Barbara area for the last 10 years. Being in the heart of wine country has inspired Shaun to create wines – his friend Steve Clifton collaborates with him to produce fine wines labelled “My First Crush”. During the Covid-19 pandemic, they partnered with “No Kid Hungry”, for which $2 from each bottle sold is donated to the charity to assist children, families and communities. Cheers to that!

After abstaining from performing for decades, the music, bright lights and live audience drew him in again even though he never thought he’d return to the stage.  Shaun stated in an interview with the Honolulu Star Advertiser, ‘It’s a strange career trajectory I’ve had, but it’s a good one’ and that he doesn’t know too many people who stopped doing one job at 21 and then picked it up again at 60. Yet he started missing that connection with an audience, and so his new show, “The Magic of a Midnight Sky” was born. Not only does he sing in the show, but he also recounts stories of his interesting life experiences. To Shaun’s surprise, five New York shows scheduled for June 2023 are already sold out, and has announced that he plans on setting up more shows before then. So on 10th and 11th March this year, Shaun performed at the Blue Note Hawaii, which was a great success. He took his family along, and on 12th March they celebrated Tracey’s birthday on the idyllic island.

That was quite a nostalgic and momentous event, as he’d come full circle since he performed at the Blaisdell Arena, Honolulu in 1978. On that occasion he was flown in by helicopter, and his screaming fans on Waikiki Beach spelt out his name with their bodies on the sand.

Shaun’s career isn’t likely to end there. At 64 years of age now, he has another goal and that is to write a Broadway musical. With his drive, passion and optimism, it could easily become a reality.
