About Randy Rhoads: How Plane Crash Shook the Metal World

Published

on

Who was Randy Rhoads?

The late American guitarist Randall William Rhoads, was born in Santa Monica, California USA, on 6 December 1956, meaning that Sagittarius was his zodiac sign. He’s probably remembered best for having been a co-founder and the guitarist of the American heavy metal band Quiet Riot, while he also played the guitar and co-wrote the songs on famous British singer-songwriter John Michael ‘Ozzy’ Osbourne’s first two albums “Blizzard of Ozz” and “Diary of a Madman”, released in 1980 and 1981, respectively.

Education and early life

Randy was raised alongside his two older siblings in Santa Monica, solely by their mother Delores Violet Rhoads, as their father William Arthur Rhoads abandoned the family when Randy was less than two years old; both William and Delores were music teachers, thus Randy’s interest in music from a very early age. His brother Kelle was also a musician.

The siblings grew up without owning a stereo, and thus entertained themselves by creating their own music; Randy’s favorite bands while growing up were The Rolling Stones and The Beatles. He was eight when Scott Shelly began teaching him rock guitar, however, less than a year later, Scott approached Randy’s mother admitting that he was no longer able to teach him, as Randy’s knowledge of the guitar had surpassed his own.

He studied at Jon Muir Middle School, and there met his future bandmate and best friend American hard rock musician and photographer Kelly Garni; they then formed their first band The Whore, thus launching their career as musicians.

Randy didn’t share many details about his education, but it’s known that he matriculated from Burbank High School in 1974.

Randy’s career and band Quiet Riot

The Whore rehearsed at the Hollywood nightspot Rodney Bingenheimer’s English Disco, and performed at backyard parties in Los Aneles, California in the mid-‘70s.

Randy, Kelly and Randy’s brother Kelle then formed the cover band Violet Fox, but which dissolved five months later; Randy then formed several bands which disbanded in less than two months, including Mildred Pierce and The Katzenjammer Kids. He knew what kind of musician he wanted to be, after watching American rock ‘n’ roll singer Alice Cooper perform live.

Randy and Kelly were 16 when they formed their band Little Women, and then renamed it to Quiet Riot when they were 18, after the band was joined by drummer Drew Forsyth and vocalist Kevin DuBrow. Randy didn’t initially like Kevin, as he’d envisioned a different frontman for their band, someone similar to David Bowie or Alice Cooper, however, Kevin performed well and was loved by the audience.

Quiet Riot signed with Sony Music Entertainment (Japan) in 1977, and their first two albums “Quiet Riot” and “Quiet Riot II” were released only in Japan, and never in the US. Kelly was fired from the band in 1978, after he’d got into a fistfight with Randy and threatened to kill Kevin – he was replaced by Rudy Sarzo.

Disappointed by not being able to sign a US recording deal, Randy quit Quiet Riot and became a guitarist in Ozzy Osbourne’s band; Quiet Riot then disbanded in 1980, but began playing again in 1982. Randy didn’t initially want to attend the audition for Ozzy Osbourne’s band, and had to be convinced by American musician Dana Strum; Ozzy was drunk when Randy performed for him, and he was instantly hired.

Ozzy and Randy then founded their band The Blizzard of Ozz, and released their eponymous debut album on 12 September 1980, which spawned hits “Crazy Train” and “Mr. Crowley”. Their second album “Diary of a Madman” was released in October 1981, and the same year saw Rudy Sarzo (previously the drummer of Quiet Riot) join the band.

Although Randy and Ozzy were good friends, Randy was determined to leave The Blizzard of Ozz once his contract had expired, because Ozzy’s drug and alcohol addiction had made it difficult for the band members to tour and perform live; he was once so drunk that he fired the entire band, but had no memory of it after sobering up.

Randy was still a member of The Blizzard of Ozz at the time of his death.

Love life and relationships

Randy rarely spoke about his love life in public, but there are still two girls whom he dated that his fans know about.

He was once in a relationship with American singer and model Jodi Vigier; it’s believed that they were together for two years before breaking up in 1980.

Randy was then in a relationship with American singer, actress and model Jo Jo Laine, and they were together at the time of his death; he didn’t marry, and had no children.

There are rumors circulating the internet claiming that Randy had an affair with American TV personality Sharon Osbourne in 1981, a year before she married Ozzy.

Interesting facts and hobbies

Randy was 5ft 7ins (1.7m) tall, and weighed only 110lbs (48kgs).

He was a collector of toy trains, and travelled around England searching for toy trains the first time he arrived there.

Randy wasn’t a fan of partying, rarely drank alcohol – his favorite drink was Anisette – and didn’t use drugs, but was a heavy smoker.

Randy’s brother Kelle described him as a ‘fairly devout Lutheran’.

His mother died at the age of 95 on 11 November 2015.

Death and wealth

Randy’s final performance was at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum on 18 March 1982; he died the next day, aged 25, when the bus driver and private pilot Andrew Aycock crashed a single-engine Beechcraft F35, with Randy and make-up artist Rachel Youngblood on board. Andrew played with the plane, trying to fly as close as possible to their bus which was on the airstrip, wanting to wake up drummer Tommy Aldridge who was sleeping in it; Andrew hit the bus with the plane’s right wing on his third pass, and then crashed into a pine tree. All three passengers were killed instantly, and their bodies burned beyond recognition.

Randy’s net worth was estimated at over $1.3 million at the time of his death.

Shadows’ Biography – Net Worth, Wife, Tattoo, Height

Published

on

Who is M Shadows?

Matthew Charles Sanders was born on 31 July 1981, in Fountain Valley, California, USA. He is a singer, musician, and songwriter, best known for performing under the stage name M Shadows, working as the lead vocalist of the band Avenged Sevenfold. He is one of the heavy metal band’s founding members, and is considered by many as one of the greatest heavy metal frontmen of all-time.

The Net Worth of M Shadows

As of early-2020, M Shadows’ net worth is estimated to be over $25 million, earned primarily through the success of the band, Avenged Sevenfold, one of the most recognized in the heavy metal genre, making music since the 2000s.

He’s also worked with other bands, as well as collaborating with the video game franchise “Call of Duty”.

Early Life and Career Beginnings

While M was born in Fountain Valley, his family later moved to Huntington Beach where he grew up with younger sister Amy Sanders, who is now known to play in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA).  He developed an interest in music at a young age, thanks to his father who gifted him his first cassette of the band Guns N’ Roses, sparking an interest which just grew as he got older.

Eventually, he learned how to play the guitar as well as the piano, skills which would also help him learn more about tone and voice. He attended Huntington Beach High School, and during this period, he aspired to start a band. He briefly joined a punk band called Successful Failure, but it was short-lived. Afterwards he reconnected with a few friends from middle school who had the same taste in music. This led to the formation of Avenged Sevenfold, as he was joined by The Rev, Zacky Vengeance, and Matt Wendt.

Avenged Sevenfold

Shadows didn’t want to use his first name as he didn’t like the way it sounded as a performer. Instead, he only adopted the first letter M and added Shadows because he felt that he was the darker character within their group. They also chose to adopt nicknames because it was a popular practice among rock groups that inspired them. Over the years, the band has released music, and gained a lot of acclaim for their diversity when it comes to their portrayal of rock and metal.

They also promoted themselves through the use of dramatic imagery, which became more evident over the years.

Their debut album “Sounding the Seventh Trumpet” helped establish them on the scene, but it wasn’t until their third album “City of Evil” that the band truly took off. The group enjoyed a lot of success until 2009, when their drummer The Rev suddenly passed away. The band continued with drummer Mike Portnoy for their 2010 album “Nightmare” which reached the top of the Billboard 200. Eventually, they took in drummer Brooks Wackerman and continued to release music, with their latest being “The Stage” which debuted in fourth spot of the Billboard 200.

Solo Projects

Apart from his work with Avenged Sevenfold, M has been a guest on albums of other well-known bands. He was featured on the album “Feel the Steel” by Steel Panther, and helped produce the album “Requiem” by The Confession – he ventured to learn more about production to help Avenged Sevenfold with their album releases as well. Other music projects he’s had include working with Slash on his solo album, and making music with the band Device.

In 2012, he made his first foray into the video game world with the development of ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops II”, in which he made a cameo contribution by doing motion capture and recording voice lines.

He is an avid player of the popular first-person shooter game, and has even participated in professional tournaments. One of his latest projects in video games is “Call of Duty: Black Ops 4” in which he became a playable character thanks to the help of a close friend who works for its developer Treyarch. He can be selected as a part of the game’s battle royale mode, which sees numerous players fight against each other in a large but shrinking map.

Vocal Ability and Style

Shadows’ vocal ability has been praised numerous times, not only for his range and versatility but also its evolution throughout his career with Avenged Sevenfold.

At the beginning of his career, he had a harsher voice filled with growls reminiscent of metalcore bands. Since 2003 he’s been more inclined towards melodic lines, but still retains his love for screams and growls. After signing with a major record label, his style changed even further, focusing more on his voice and melody as opposed to the screaming. He took numerous lessons to improve his style, working with Ron Anderson who is known for his collaborations with Audioslave and Guns N’ Roses.

The band also contributed, with each member becoming a part of the vocal whole as opposed to Shadows taking the brunt of the work.

This led to rumors going around that he had lost his ability to scream, as a result of having throat surgery after damaging his voice sometime in 2003. Other musicians defended him, stating that he has indicated a desire to be more of a singer than a screamer with his music. He is also a big advocate in protecting his voice, and prefers hitting the notes rather than going for raspy sounds that could damage his throat again.

Personal Life

M married Valary DiBenedetto in 2009 and they have two children together. His bandmate Synyster Gates married Valary’s twin sister Michelle which makes the two band members brothers-in-law as well. He spends a lot of his free time, learning more about music, working on new music, and playing video games. He also spends a lot of his time learning more about preserving his voice and prioritizes resting his voice when not working with the band.

She took up the pseudonym ARO which are her initials and started recording music and releasing it as well. Her musical style has been characterized as synth-pop, which is a drastic contrast to her father’s musical style that is described as heavy metal. In 2015, she released her debut music video entitled “Raining Gold”. The single was a massive success and gained 2.5 million views on YouTube in just two months. She described her music as ‘The rest of the album is still very much kind of cinematic, haunting, and atmospheric feel. Some of the songs are a little heavier; some of the songs are bit more sweet (sic), but still kind of spooky in a way.’ She has performed in three live shows – Union Pool and Mercury Lounge both in New York in April 2015, and The Echo in Los Angeles on 9 February 2016.

She has expressed her nervousness in performing before an audience, and has learned to calm herself down saying ‘I’ve learned to kind of accept that [if being nervous before a show is] what’s going on inside of me, to just ignore it a little bit.’ She released two more videos in 2016, entitled “I Can Change” and “Cocaine Style”.

She then took a break, until in October 2018 announcing on her Instagram handle that she was currently working on an EP, and thanked her fans for all the patience. The MTV Reality Show “The Osbournes”

Aimee refused to film for the reality show “The Osbournes”, since she is a private person and thought that by appearing on the show the audience would typecast her, affecting her musical career. Her siblings Jack and Kelly earned fans from their appearance on the show. Sharon Osbourne talked to CBS morning talk show called “The Talk” saying ‘Aimee didn’t want to grow up on camera. She hated the idea, it was appalling to her. And so she left at 16 and I regret every day that she did.’

Aimee talked through NYLON magazine about her decision not to be part of “The Osbournes”, saying ‘It was just not my aspiration. Everywhere you went people wanted to know everything, and that when you’re growing up that can be kind of intimidating. The idea of kind of letting it all out there at that point, at around fifteen… Nobody at fifteen wants anybody to see how goofy their parents are.’

Even though Aimee hated the thought of being under the spotlight when she was younger, she eventually grew up to become a household name in the entertainment business, with her acting and singing career. Born John Michael Osbourne on 3 December 1948, he is a singer, songwriter, television personality and actor. He rose to fame as the lead vocalist of the band Black Sabbath, and nicknamed himself the ‘Prince of Darkness’ during the time. He was let go from the band due to problems with alcohol and drugs in 1979, however, kept working on his music and had a successful solo music career. He released 12 albums during his musical tenure, and seven of them were awarded multi-platinum certifications.

He reunited with Black Sabbath in 1979 and recorded the album “13”.

In 2015, the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors bestowed the Ivor Novello Award for Lifetime Achievement.

Personal life

Ozzy first met his wife Thelma Riley at a nightclub called the Rum Runner. They married in the year 1971 and sired Jessica and Louis; Ozzy also adopted Thelma’s son Elliot.
